There is no law which requires a municipality to make a reduction in a water bill based on a leak on the customer's side of the meter. However, any account holder may request an adjustment for a leak by contacting the Mayor or BOA. A receipt showing repairs made to correct the leak will be needed in order to be placed on the agenda for the next board meeting. The BOA will approve or deny a leak adjustment based on the facts given.

The water meter is designed similar to the odometer in your car. It will only measure the amount of water coming through the meter. The meter will never run faster than it was designed to, and it cannot speed up or register a higher reading than actual usage. As the meter ages, the meter slows, measuring less usage and eventually stops registering altogether. During regular maintenance, the City replaces these meteres when the need arises.

In 1872 Pearl County was formed from land taken from Marion and Hancock Counties and was inhabited by a tribe of Indians called “Caesar” after their chief. New Settlers came from Virginia and North Carolina; their ancestors were from the British Isles. For financial reasons Pearl River County was abolished in 1878. After it was abolished, Northern syndicates bought the virgin forest of the south and a railroad was built.

Meter boxes are set in the ground and will retain water from various sources, such as rain, sprinklers, or runoff. If none of these are the source and you see water in your meter box, you may have a leak. Look at the dials on the meter. Movement on the red indicator tells you water is moving through the meter, and you are losing water somewhere on your side of the meter. If the red indicator is not turning, you a have a service leak. A service leak is a leak on the City side of the meter and does not affect your consumption or water bill.

Your bill is based on the amount of water measured on your meter. If your bill is higher than normal, we recommend to read your meter and compare your reading to the reading on your bill.
If your reading is lower than the reading on your bill, then give us a call immediately to let us know of the error. We will send someone out to verify the reading and make an adjustment as needed.
